The Indian Income Tax Department has addressed concerns regarding delays in processing tax refunds, providing clarity on the expected timelines and common reasons for hold-ups. This comes as numerous taxpayers who have already filed their Income Tax Returns (ITR) are still awaiting their due refunds, a topic trending as "टैक्स रिफंड" across India.

Typically, once an ITR is processed and verified, the tax refund is credited to the taxpayer's bank account within a few weeks. However, various factors can contribute to significant delays, extending the waiting period for many.

One primary reason for a delayed refund is often an error or mismatch in the bank account details provided during the ITR filing. If the account number is incorrect, not pre-validated, or if the account is jointly held and only one PAN is linked, the refund transfer can fail. Taxpayers are advised to ensure their bank account is accurately linked and pre-validated on the e-filing portal.

Another common issue stems from discrepancies in the ITR itself. Any mismatch between the income reported in the ITR and the data available with the Income Tax Department, such as in Form 26AS or Annual Information Statement (AIS), can trigger a manual review, slowing down the processing significantly.

Furthermore, if the taxpayer has an outstanding demand from previous assessment years, the department may adjust the current year's refund against that demand. In such cases, the taxpayer is usually notified about the adjustment, and the remaining amount, if any, is then processed.

Technical glitches on the e-filing portal or during the refund processing stage by the banks can also lead to delays. While less frequent, these system-wide issues can impact a large number of taxpayers simultaneously.

In some instances, the refund may be delayed if the ITR was filed close to the deadline, leading to a backlog in processing. Additionally, if the ITR is selected for scrutiny, the refund will only be processed after the completion of the assessment, which can take several months.

For taxpayers, proactively checking the refund status on the Income Tax e-filing portal is crucial. The portal provides real-time updates on the status, from 'Refund Due' to 'Refund Dispatched' or 'Refund Failed'. If a refund fails, the reason is usually provided, allowing the taxpayer to take corrective action promptly.

What happens next is that affected taxpayers are encouraged to verify their bank details and ITR accuracy on the e-filing portal. The Income Tax Department continues to work towards streamlining the process and reducing refund timelines, ensuring faster credit of funds to eligible taxpayers.
