The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, a central component of Norway’s modern air defense, and the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, an aircraft exclusively operated by the United States Air Force, represent two distinct approaches to fifth-generation fighter technology. While both aircraft offer advanced stealth capabilities and sophisticated avionics, their design, primary roles, and operational characteristics differ significantly, reflecting varied strategic objectives.
The F-22 Raptor, introduced in the mid-2000s, was conceived primarily as an air superiority fighter. Its design emphasizes speed, agility, and exceptional stealth to achieve dominance in aerial combat. The F-22’s powerful twin engines and advanced aerodynamic features allow it to supercruise—sustain supersonic flight without using afterburners—giving it a crucial advantage in high-altitude engagements. Its operational doctrine centers on defeating adversary aircraft, securing airspaces, and neutralizing airborne threats.
In contrast, the F-35 Lightning II is a multirole fighter designed for a broader spectrum of missions, including air-to-ground strike, electronic warfare, and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), in addition to air-to-air combat. This versatility is achieved through a single-engine design that prioritizes sensor fusion, network-centric operations, and a highly integrated avionics suite. The F-35 is produced in three main variants: the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) F-35A, the short takeoff/vertical landing (STOVL) F-35B, and the carrier-based F-35C.
Norway, like many other NATO allies, opted for the F-35A to replace its aging F-16 fleet, with deliveries beginning in 2017. The F-35’s interoperability with allied forces, its advanced sensor capabilities, and its ability to gather and disseminate intelligence are crucial for Norway's defense posture in the High North. While the F-22 boasts superior kinematic performance in air-to-air combat, the F-35 excels in its ability to act as a "quarterback" for the battlespace, fusing information from multiple sources to provide unparalleled situational awareness to pilots and other assets. This network-centric approach allows the F-35 to enhance the effectiveness of other platforms, making it a critical component of a broader, integrated defense system rather than a standalone air superiority fighter.
Looking ahead, both aircraft continue to receive software and hardware upgrades to address emerging threats and integrate new technologies.
